Assisted living is licensed by each state, not the federal government — which is why there's no single official lookup. Senior Home Review compiles the state licensing rosters into one place: 43,383 facilities currently carry a state license number on their page, with capacity and status where the state publishes them.

Search the facility

Use the facility search — name, state, or the ZIP from a brochure. The free page shows the state license number, licensed capacity, license status, and the licensing agency it came from.

Check what the license covers

The “Licensed as” line shows the state's licensure category — states license assisted living under different names (residential care, personal care home, adult care home) with different rules. Memory-care certification is flagged separately where the state records it.

Verify against the source

Every page names the agency the record came from and when it was last updated. For a legal determination — pending enforcement actions, conditional licenses — confirm with the state agency directly; our data sources page lists each state's system of record.

Why look it up here

Fifty states, fifty portals, fifty formats — some publish clean rosters, some publish nothing without a records request. We've done that work, keep it refreshed, and show the provenance. And unlike marketing directories, the license data sits next to the facility's inspection and ownership record, not a sales pitch.
